The cove of Carteau in the Golf of Fos is connected to the river Rhône with its fresh water by canals and pipes, necessary conditions to mussel farming and their specificities. Mussel breeding is the specialty of Port-Saint-Louis with the local production of Carteau mussels (The production represents about 10% of the national production) and Camargue's oysters.

In a word, shells and principally wedge shells are collected on sandy beaches.
